Japan and four Central Asian countries have agreed to step up cooperation in fighting terrorism and drug trafficking.
Japan's foreign minister, Taro Aso, signed an action plan in Tokyo today (Monday) with his counterparts from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. The document also calls for closer cooperation in economic and energy development.
Afghanistan's foreign minister also took part in what was called the "Central Asia plus Japan Dialogue" as an observer.
Aso said he hopes the meeting will contribute to stability and prosperity in Central Asia. The predominantly Muslim region experienced a spread of radical Islam after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.
Japanese officials stressed the strategic importance of the region's crude oil and gas reserves to Japan's energy-hungry economy.
