일본의 요코하마 지방 법원은 2일 일본 여성을 살해한 혐의로 기소된 미군 해군 병사에게 무기 징역을 선고했습니다. 21살의 윌리엄 올리버 리스 피고는 지난 1월 도쿄 남서부의 요코스카 미 해군 기지 근처에서 56살의 일본 여성 사토 요시에씨의 돈을 빼앗고 폭력을 휘둘러 숨지게 한 혐의로 기소됐었습니다.
리스 병사는 이날 요코하마시 법원에서 열린 재판에서 사토씨에게 폭력을 행사한 혐의는 인정했으나 살해할 의도는 없었다고 말했습니다.

A Japanese court has sentenced a U.S. Navy sailor to life in prison for killing a Japanese woman.
Twenty-one-year old William Oliver Reese was accused of robbing and fatally beating 56-year-old Yoshie Sato in January. The attack occurred near the U.S. Navy base in Yokosuka, southwest of Tokyo.
Reese admitted to the court in the port city of Yokohama (just outside Tokyo) that he beat the woman, but said he did not intend to kill her.
Reese was stationed on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier.
The killing rekindled concerns about crimes committed by U.S. military personnel in Japan.
In 1995, Japanese citizens protested against the U.S. military presence after the rape of a schoolgirl in Okinawa prefecture.
