유엔 안전보장 이사회의 영국, 프랑스, 러시아, 중국 등 5개 상임 이사국과 독일 등 여섯 나라 고위 외교관들은 이란의 우라늄 농축 활동을 중단시키는 보상책과 이란이 이를 거부할 경우에 취할 제재조치에 관해 논의할 예정이었습니다.
한편, 이란의 마흐무드 아흐마디네자드 대통령은 이란이 우라늄 농축 활동을 포기하는 댓가로 이란에게 경수로를 제공할 수도 있다는 유럽연합 제안에 비웃는 반응을 보였습니다
아흐마디네자드 대통령은 또, 서방 세계가 이란의 평화적인 핵연구 활동 종식을 강요하면 이란은 핵확산 금지조약, NPT 탈퇴를 실행하게 될 지도 모른다고 강조했습니다.

A top-level six-nation meeting of world powers planned for Friday on the Iranian nuclear stand-off has been postponed.
Diplomats from Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and the United States were to have considered incentives that would reward Iran for ending its uranium enrichment work, and threaten penalties if it refuses.
A U.S. State Department spokesman says the meeting will probably take place Tuesday, and its postponement does not reflect disagreement among participants at the talks.
Earlier Wednesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ridiculed a potential European offer of a light-water nuclear reactor. European envoys have characterized the reactor as a key component in the incentives package.
The Iranian leader also says Iran may withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if the West continues to demand an end to what he insists are Iran's peaceful nuclear ambitions.
