The state of California and the city of Los Angeles have filed a lawsuit against Coca-Cola, accusing the U.S. soft drink giant of using lead-based paint on labels of its products bottled in its Mexican plants and sold in California.
The lawsuit was filed Monday in a Los Angeles court. It says Coca-Cola and its Mexican affiliates violated a state law that mandates warning labels on products that could expose consumers to hazardous chemicals.
The beverage company calls the allegations "outlandish."
The lawsuit is similar to one filed against U.S.-based PepsiCo, Coca-Cola's main rival in the soft drink market. PepsiCo reached a settlement with state and Los Angeles officials last month to stop putting labels containing lead-based paint on bottles imported from Mexico.
