국제원자력기구의 모하마드 엘바라데이 사무총장은 이란 핵문제를 둘러싼 국제사회의 갈등을 외교적으로 해결할 것을 또다시 촉구했습니다.
엘바라데이 사무총장은 유엔안전보장 이사회에서 이란 제제 조치여부에 관한 회의가 연기된것을 환영했습니다.
서방 정부들은 이란이 의무적으로 우라늄 농축 활동을 전면 중단하게 하거나 또는 제재를 가할 유엔 안보리 결의안을 모색하고 있습니다.
한편, 이란의 마흐므두 아흐마디네자드 대통령은 자국의 핵문제와 관련 서방세계와의 갈등을 해결하기 위해 누구와도 대화할 준비가 되어 있다고 말했습니다. 인도네시아 자카르타를 방문중인 아흐마디네자드 대통령은 11일 인도네시아의 한 텔레비전 방송과의 대담에서 이같이 말했습니다.
아흐마디네자드 대통령은 핵무기를 이미 보유하고 있는 나라들이 이란의 평화적 핵개발 계획을 억제하기 위해 압박하는 것은 우스운 일이라고 말했습니다.
미국과 다른 많은 동맹국들은 이란이 핵무기 개발을 위한 목적으로 핵활동을 추진하고 있다고 주장하고 있습니다. 이란은 그같은 혐의를 부인하고 있습니다. 한편 코피 아난 유엔 사무총자은 유엔에서 10일 이란은 자국의 핵 연구가 평화적 목적임을 전세계에 보여줄 의무가 있다고 강조했습니다.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency has renewed an appeal for a diplomatic solution to the crisis over Iran's suspect nuclear program.
Speaking today (Thursday) in Amsterdam, Mohamed ElBaradei welcomed the delay in a U.N. Security Council debate on whether to impose sanctions on Tehran. Western governments are seeking a Security Council resolution that would oblige Iran to halt all uranium enrichment work, or face sanctions.
ElBaradei said he hoped both sides will agree on a compromise to ensure that Iran has the right to peaceful nuclear technology. He also called on Iran to initiate confidence-building measures with the international community.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he is ready to engage in a dialogue with anyone to resolve the standoff.
Speaking today in Indonesia, Mr. Ahmadinejad said it was "ridiculous" for countries that already possess nuclear arsenals to pressure Iran to curb its peaceful nuclear program.
