U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Western governments will wait several weeks before pressing for United Nations action against Iran and its suspect nuclear program. Rice spoke today (Wednesday on U.S. television), saying the lull will allow for Europeans to design an incentives package aimed at persuading Tehran to end its nuclear fuel program.
Meanwhile, President Bush says a letter from Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has failed to answer the key question of when Tehran will abandon its nuclear program. On Tuesday, U.S. officials called the letter a last-minute attempt to divide the U.N. Security Council.
The five permanent Council members are considering whether to impose sanctions on Tehran for refusing to end its uranium enrichment activities.
In another development, Time Magazine has published a separate letter from another top Iranian official, offering what is described as a foundation for negotiations to resolve the nuclear impasse.
