President Bush's national security adviser says General Michael will be named today (Monday) as the next director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
Mr. Bush's security aide (Stephen Hadley) praised General Hayden as "a man who has broad experience in the intelligence business," and rebutted critics who say a civilian should lead the CIA.
Unofficial reports from White House officials today indicate the Bush administration will try to ease concerns about leadership of the civilian spy agency by replacing the CIA's second-ranking official, currently a senior naval officer.
Mr. Bush is expected to formally announce General Hayden's nomination shortly (about 1330 UTC). The appointment must be reviewed and approved by the U.S. Senate. Several of the chamber's senior Republican members already have signaled they are less than enthusiastic about the president's choice.
