The African Union says the largest of the rebel factions in Sudan's Darfur region has agreed to sign a peace plan with Khartoum.
An A.U. spokesman announced today (Friday) that the Sudan Liberation Army has aceepted the peace deal.
Negotiations in Abuja, Nigeria had collapsed earlier, when negotiators from the SLA and another rebel faction (the Justice and Equality Movement) refused to sign the document unless changes were made. The rejections came despite heavy pressure from the international community.
U.S. negotiators have taken a prominent role since Sunday, when rebel leaders rejected a Sudan-approved draft agreement.
President Bush said Thursday the rape, murder and suffering in Darfur must stop, and that genocide will not be tolerated.
