인도네시아 자바섬의 메라피 화산이 며칠내에 폭발할지 모른다고 과학자들이 경고한 가운데, 현지시간으로 4일 아침 화산 분화구에서 용암이 흘러내리기 시작했습니다. 화산학자들은 메라피 화산 인근지역에 두번째 높은 수준의 경계경보를 발령했습니다.
전문가들은 지난 4월말, 메라피 화산이 1-2주내에 폭발할 가능성이 있다고 경고했으나, 화산 인근마을의 주민들은 대피하길 꺼리고있다고, 현지 관계관들이 전했습니다.
관계관들의 말을 인용한 프랑스 뉴스 통신은 대피주민들의 수가 3만7천명에 이를 것으로 추산하고있으나, 현재까지 대피한 인원은 3천5백명에 불과하다고 보도했습니다.

Molten lava has begun spilling from the crater of a volcano on Indonesia's Java island, following warnings from scientists that it may erupt within days.
The first lava flow began early this morning (1900 GMT) on Mount Merapi. Vulcanologists have issued a standby alert near Merapi, the second highest alert level.
Experts warned in late April that the volcano could erupt in the next one to two weeks, but officials say many of the people abandoning villages near Mount Merapi are doing so reluctantly. They say many others have refused to leave.
The French news agency quotes officials as saying that 37-thousand evacuees are expected, but only 35-hundred have relocated, so far.
Merapi last erupted in 1994, killing around 60 people. One of its most destructive eruptions was in 1930, when about 13-hundred people were killed.
