Bolivian President Evo Morales has issued a formal decree nationalizing the country's oil and natural gas resources.
Mr. Morales issued the decree today (Monday) during a speech at the San Alberto gas field in southern Bolivia.
The president said foreign energy companies will have to agree to new contracts with the state-run oil firm,
Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos. He warned that companies that reject the decree will have to leave Bolivia within six months.
The main oil companies operating in Bolivia include Brazil's Petrobras and the Spanish company Repsol YPF.
Bolivia has the second highest natural gas reserves in Latin America, after Venezuela.
