이집트 의회는 아메드 나지프 총리의 요청에 따라 비상사태를 2년 간 연장했습니다. 이집트는 이슬람 과격분자들이 안와르 사타트 대통령을 암살한 1981년 이래 비상사태를 선포해 시행하고 있습니다.
비상사태에 따라 이집트 정부는 아무런 혐의 없이도 국민을 구금할 수 있으며 자유를 제한할 수 있습니다.
앞서 나지프 총리는 30일 최근 잇따르고 있는 폭발사건과 종교적 대립상황 때문에 비상사태 연장이 필요하다고 밝혔습니다.
이집트에서는 지난 24일 3명의 자살폭탄 테러범이 홍해의 휴양지인 다하브에서 공격을 가해 18명이 사망하고 90명이 부상했습니다. 또 이틀 뒤에는 실패로 끝나긴 했지만 북부 시나이 반도에서 2명의 자살테러범이 보안요원들을 공격한 바 있습니다.

Egypt's parliament has extended the state of emergency in the country by two years at the request of Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif.
Emergency rule has been in effect in Egypt since 1981, when Islamic militants assassinated President Anwar Sadat. It gives the government wide powers to detain people without charge and restrict civil liberties.
Prime Minister Nazif told parliament today (Sunday) the extension is necessary because of recent bombings and sectarian clashes.
Three suicide bombers struck the Red Sea resort of Dahab on April 24th, killing 18 people (plus the bombers) and wounding 90 others. Two days later, two suicide attacks were carried out against security personnel in Sinai, but only the bombers died.
