22일 시작된 국제통화기금과 세계은행 연례회의에서는 치솟는 유가와 전세계 무역불균형, 그리고 중국의 고정환율 문제가 주요 쟁점으로 논의될 전망입니다.
미국의 수도 워싱턴에서 열리는 이번 회의에 앞서 미국과 일본, 영국, 독일, 프랑스, 캐나다 및 이탈리아 등 주요 선진 7개국 고위 경제 관계자들은 별도의 회담을 열었습니다. 이들은 회담 뒤 발표한 성명에서 중국에 대해 무역흑자를 해결하기 위해 환율을 좀더 신축성 있게 조정하도록 촉구했습니다.
이들은 또 국제통화기금에 대해 회원국들의 환율 관련 관행을 좀더 적극적으로 감시할 필요가 있다고 지적했습니다. 아울러 미국에 대해 엄청난 예산적자 문제에 대처하도록 하는 등 각국이 세계 무역불균형에 대처하기 위해 취해야 할 조처들에 대해 밝혔습니다.

Rising oil prices, global trade imbalances and China's inflexible currency rates are among issues for discussion today (Saturday) at the start of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
The meetings in Washington begin a day after a gathering of the top economic officials from the world's seven major industrialized nations (the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany, France, Canada and Italy). The group issued a statement calling on China to convert its currency to a more flexible exchange rate as a means of addressing Beijing's trade surplus with much of the world.
The economic officials say the I.M.F. needs to take a more aggressive role in monitoring the currency practices of its member nations.
The statement also spelled out what other nations could do to address global trade imbalances, such as the U.S. reducing its huge budget deficit.
