More than one-thousand Russians have demonstrated in Moscow to protest the government's control over national media. Several prominent journalists who have lost their jobs took part in the protest, in which demonstrators carried signs in defense of freedom of the press.
Today's (Sunday's) protest came on the fifth anniversary of the takeover of private NTV television by the state-controlled oil giant Gazprom.
Since that takeover, other Russian networks have come under state control, resulting in a dramatic muting of reporting critical of the government.
