후진타오 국가 주석은 리엔 찬 전 타이완 야당 지도자와 16일 베이징에서 회담을 갖고, 중국과 타이완은 가능한 한 동등한 지위에 관한 회담을 재개해야만 한다고 말했습니다.
중국과 타이완은 1949년 내전으로 나뉘어졌으며 중국은 타이완을 변절한 독립자치지역으로 간주하고, 반드시 본토와 재 통합되어야 한다고 주장하고 있습니다. 중국 정부는 15일, 타이완산 청과류와 어류에 대한 본토 시장을 개방하게 될 일련의 세금 삭감안을 제의했습니다.
타이완 집권당은 그러나 그같은 제의는 타이완 정부의 힘을 약화시키려는 노력이라며 거절했습니다.
(영문) Chinese President Hu Jintao is calling for new talks with Taiwan in an effort to maintain peace in the region.
Mr. Hu told Taiwan's former opposition leader, Lien Chan, in Beijing today (Sunday) the two sides should resume talks on "equal footing" as soon as possible. China and Taiwan split in 1949 after a civil war. China considers the independently governed island a renegade province and insists it must reunify with the mainland.
Beijing has been trying to generate support for its cause through trade concessions. On Saturday, China offered a series of tax cuts that would open up mainland markets to Taiwan-produced fruit, vegetables and fish. But Taiwan's ruling party rejected the peace overture and accused Beijing of trying to undermine the government's power.
