Afghan officials say 41 Taleban fighters and six Afghan policemen have been killed in a fierce battle in the southern part of the country.
Kandahar governor Assadullah Khalid told reporters today (Saturday) that the battle southwest of Kandahar city lasted all day Friday. The exchange was one of the most intense in months and comes in response to a sharp increase in insurgent activity.
U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant Mike Cody says rocket-firing helicopters from the U.S.-led coalition supported Afghan forces.
Governor Khalid said nine policemen and a large number of Taleban rebels were wounded, but foreign forces suffered no casualties. He also said 13 suspected Taleban rebels were detained Friday.
