Mission controllers at the European Space Agency say its space probe has begun orbiting the planet Venus.
The space agency in Darmstadt, Germany said today (Tuesday) the probe's main engine was switched on for 50 minutes to help reduce its speed and allow it to be caught in the planet's gravitational pull.
Called Venus Express, the craft will conduct a detailed study of the structure, chemistry and dynamics of the planet's toxic atmosphere.
Venus is the nearest planet to Earth within the solar system. Scientists hope the mission will provide answers to questions relevant to Earth.
Venus Express was launched in November from the Baikonur space facility in Kazakhstan. It is the second probe to another planet launched by the European Space Agency.
