President Bush says he wants to use diplomacy to prevent Iran from having the means and knowledge to develop nuclear weapons, although he says he has not ruled out a military option.
Mr. Bush told an audience in Washington today (Monday) that he has read media reports on supposed plans for U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. He called those reports "wild speculation." Mr. Bush says having several countries raise the nuclear issue with Iran is the best course.
Iranian President Mamoud Ahmadinejad has urged Iranians not to be afraid, and he accused the United States of waging "psychological warfare" that included the reports in the New Yorker magazine and the Washington Post newspaper.
Washington accuses Iran of using its nuclear program as a cover for developing an atomic bomb - a charge Tehran denies.
Meanwhile, President Bush has marked the third anniversary of the fall of Baghdad and Saddam Hussein's regime, calling it a great moment in the history of freedom.
Speaking in Washington today (Monday), Mr. Bush praised coalition forces and their families for making sacrifices to liberate Iraq.
He also hailed the Iraqi people for working to rebuild the nation and for taking part in elections to choose a new government, despite threats from insurgents.
The president said now is the time for Iraq's elected officials to come together to form a new government.
Mr. Bush added that coalition and Iraqi forces are committed to battling insurgent groups in Iraq.
He says the worst thing that could happen is for terrorists to acquire weapons of mass destruction, and said he is determined to prevent that from happening.
