French labor unions have appealed to President Jacques Chirac to intervene in a growing dispute over his government's proposed jobs law.
The country's five leading labor unions sent a letter to Mr. Chirac late Tuesday asking him to strip the law of controversial changes to youth job contracts and send the legislation back to parliament for a new debate.
More than one million people marched through French cities Tuesday during a day-long general strike.
French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin pushed the legislation through the lower house of parliament last month. The bill would make it easier for employers to fire young workers during the first two years on the job.
Mr. Chirac's office says he will speak publicly on the controversy in the next few days. The labor unions are expected to meet today (Wednesday) to discuss their next move.
