The United States and South Korea have begun their annual joint military exercises despite objections by North Korea.
U.S. military officials say the seven-day exercises in South Korea will include at least five-thousand U.S. troops. It is not clear how many South Korean troops will take part.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency says Pyongyang immediately denounced the start of the exercises (Saturday). The report quoted the North Korean news agency as describing the exercises as "aimed at lighting a detonating fuse at the invasion of the North."
Pyongyang has repeatedly accused the U.S. of using the drills to prepare for an invasion, a claim Washington denies.
