Hardline Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has won re-election to a third straight term in a landslide election victory the opposition says was rigged.
Central Election Commission officials said today (Monday) Mr. Lukashenko garnered nearly 83 percent (82.6%) of the vote with all ballots counted, while his closest challenger, liberal opposition candidate Alexander Milinkevich, received only six percent support.
Mr. Milinkevich called the results a "farce," and called for a "new and fair" election. He also called on his supporters to rally late today (Monday) following a large demonstration in Minsk Sunday. The European Union says the Belarus election was marred by a "climate of intimidation."
Europe's main election-monitoring group (, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe,) is due to issue its findings today (Monday) on the legitimacy of Sunday's election. Mr. Lukashenko, who has ruled the former Soviet Republic since 1994, has not commented on the election results.
