Vietnam's prime minister has begun a two-day visit to Cambodia. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen welcomed his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai today (Monday) at Phnom Penh's airport. Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said the visit is meant to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
In October, the two prime ministers signed a border demarcation deal in Hanoi that led to political controversy. Cambodian opposition leaders accused Hun Sen of ceding Cambodian land to Vietnam. Hun Sen responded by suing and incarcerating several of his political opponents for criminal defamation.
They were released on bail last month following domestic and international condemnation. The border has been a contentious issue since Vietnamese troops occupied Cambodia for a decade after toppling the Khmer Rouge in 1979.
