The governor of (the U.S. state of) South Dakota (Mike Rounds) has signed legislation banning nearly all abortions in his state -- in a move to challenge the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in 1973.
The controversial law would make it a crime for doctors in South Dakota to perform an abortion unless the procedure is necessary to save the woman's life. It makes no exception for cases of rape or incest. Doctors in the state who perform abortions would face a maximum five-year prison term.
