A U.S. official says Palestinian leaders have returned 30-million dollars in U.S. aid ahead of the Islamic militant group Hamas forming a government.
Washington had asked that the money be returned so it would not come under the control of Hamas.
A State Department official (Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, David Welch) told a Congressional committee (Thursday) the money was returned Wednesday and a further 20-million is to be given back soon.
He said Washington is looking for ways to fund Palestinian humanitarian efforts without going through Hamas.
The United States lists Hamas as a terrorist organization, and says it will have no dealings with the group unless it renounces violence and recognizes Israel.
In London Thursday, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said the Hamas parliamentary victory in January has fueled the aspirations of Islamic militants throughout the Middle East.
She has been touring Europe to warn nations against funding a Hamas-led government. Hamas is expected to form a government within the next weeks.
