중국 정부 관리들은 오는 2008년 베이징에서 열리는 올림픽에 앞서 공공장소에서 침을 뱉는 습관을 없애기 위한 방안을 강구하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
베이징시 윤리문화청의 장휘강 국장은 1일 당국은 올림픽 경기가 열리기 전에 시민들의 공공행태를 개선하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 만연한 침뱉기에 대한 단속을 강화하겠다고 말했습니다.
중국에서는 공공장소에서 침을 뱉을 경우 약 5달러의 벌금을 물게 됩니다. 하지만 베이징 방문객들은 거리에서 사람들이 침을 뱉거나 코를 푸는 일이 너무 흔한데 자주 놀랍니다. 중국 정부 관리들은 지난 2003년 사스 (중증급성호흡기증후군) 전염병이 발생했을 때도 침뱉기에 대한 단속을 강화한 바 있습니다.

Government officials in Beijing say they are working to eliminate the widespread habit of public spitting, ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games.
The director of Beijing's Ethics and Cultural Office, Zhang Huiguang, said today (Wednesday) officials will be stepping up enforcement against rampant spitting, in an effort to improve public behavior before the city is put on display during the Games.
Under Beijing law, public spitting is punishable by a fine of up to about five dollars.
Visitors to the Chinese capital are often shocked by the unusually common practice of spitting or blowing noses onto city streets and sidewalks.
Chinese officials also tried to rein in the practice in 2003 at the height of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak.
