Afghan police and troops backed by tanks have surrounded a high-security prison in Kabul today (Monday) to control an uprising by Taleban and al-Qaida inmates.
Afghanistan's deputy justice minister (Mohammed Qasim Hashimzai) says more than one thousand men armed with makeshift weapons are in control of a large part of the Pul-e-Charkhi prison.
The official says most of the rioters are either Taleban militants or members of the al-Qaida terror network.
Violence at the prison erupted late Saturday when inmates were ordered to begin wearing prison uniforms. Authorities issued the uniforms to prevent any repeat of an escape plot last month in which seven Taleban members left the prison disguised as civilians.
Few details are available about conditions inside the prison. Unconfirmed reports say there have been several fatalities.
