A United Nations official says the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain is still spreading in Nigeria and could cause a regional disaster.

Joseph Domenech, the top veterinary officer for the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, says Nigerian officials have taken the right measures such as culling (killing) birds in outbreak areas.

But he adds that authorities face huge obstacles to control the outbreak. He says the movement and trade of chickens have contributed strongly to the spread of the virus.

Nigeria has so far confirmed the presence of H5N1 among birds in five northern states and the capital, Abuja.

The strain is blamed for the deaths of tens of thousands of chickens across Nigeria, though no human cases of bird flu have been found.
