INTRODUCTION: Over the last month American medical researchers have published several studies that seem to challenge the way doctors previously treated diseases that affect millions of people. VOA's Peter Fedynsky looks beyond the headlines to examine how medical research can sometimes be misinterpreted.

NARRATOR: Recent headlines about a seven-year study of hip fractures in women ages 50 to 70 suggest that calcium tablets provide only limited protection against broken bones. This raised questions among women who had been taking calcium tablets at the advice of their doctors. MOS: "It makes you question whether I'm doing the right thing or not." NARRATOR: However, a closer look at the research shows a distinct benefit from calcium supplements for a major subgroup of more than 36-thousand women who participated in the study. Dr. Barbara Howard is president of Medstar Research, a private non-profit research institute.

DR. BARBARA HOWARD, PRESIDENT, MEDSTAR RESEARCH INSTITUTE: "Women over 60 showed a definite benefit in lowering hip fractures. The women who took their pills had a statistically significant reduction in hip fracture. But did it show calcium could then eliminate all hip fractures? No, because obviously there are many causes of hip fracture and keeping up one's calcium intake is probably only a small piece of the total puzzle in understanding hip fracture."

NARRATOR: Age is also a variable in another recent study that seems to have contradicted previous research, specifically, about hormone therapy to treat symptoms of menopause. Earlier data cautioned that a combination of the hormones estrogen and progestin increased a woman's risk of heart attack and stroke. The latest research leaves the warning in place for women over 60, but suggests a benefit for those in their 50s.

DR. BARBARA HOWARD, PRESIDENT, MEDSTAR RESEARCH INSTITUTE: "What we found previously is that on balance the risk outweighs the benefits of taking hormones. We know that hormones are sometimes necessary for women who are just going through menopause for relief of symptoms. And all of this latest study showed is that for heart disease the adverse effects may not be so great in those younger women.

NARRATOR: Dr. Howard says that people often expect scientific research to provide simple and complete answers. She notes, however, that even the biggest, longest and most expensive studies provide only partial answers to complex medical questions.

DR. BARBARA HOWARD, PRESIDENT, MEDSTAR RESEARCH INSTITUTE: "We really don't understand what makes the brain work. What makes you and I (sic) think. We don't understand what causes cancer. We're just tackling heart disease. We know a lot of things about it, but we're finding out it's very complicated with many different risk factors that work together."

NARRATOR: Dr. Howard says medical research is like a puzzle that is assembled one piece at a time. She points to great strides over the last 50 years in learning about DNA, genetics and physiology, but adds that big gaps remain in our understanding of the human body.
