Rescuers at the site of a massive landslide in the Philippines are focusing their efforts on reaching a school buried under nearly 30 meters of mud. They say sensing equipment has detected sounds from where they believe the building is buried.
However, rescuers said today (Monday) they are not sure what has been making the noise. No survivors have been pulled from the 40-hectare pile of mud and debris that used to be the village of Guinsaugon on Leyte island since Friday, when 20 people were rescued just after the tragedy occurred.
Officials in the Philippines had sharply cut their estimate of those missing to about 940 from earlier calculations of 18 hundred. But civil defense officials said today that one thousand, 350 people are still missing. Officials have also said 72 bodies have been recovered since the landslide struck.
