Senior Iranian and Russian officials are holding talks in Moscow, discussing a Russian proposal to resolve Iran's nuclear stand-off with the West. Moscow is offering to allow Iran to conduct its uranium enrichment activity on Russian soil - an arrangement designed to ensure no uranium is diverted for nuclear weapons.
Iran's foreign minister (Manouchehr Mottaki) has urged the West not to take the nuclear dispute to the United Nations Security Council. Speaking in Brussels after talks today with his Belgian counterpart (Karel De Gucht), the Iranian minister said Tehran remains ready to hear any new proposal to resolve the issue. Iran is making diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis before the March sixth Security Council session to hear Western charges that Tehran is in violation of a key nuclear treaty and is trying to develop nuclear weapons.
Earlier this month, Iran restarted a uranium enrichment program that could produce fuel for civilian nuclear reactors or material for weapons.
