At least 17 Iraqis have been killed today (Monday) in bombing attacks in Baghdad and the northern city of Mosul. In Baghdad, 12 people died and eight others were wounded when a suicide bomber set off explosives in a bus in a mostly Shi'ite district (Kadhimiya) - the site of frequent attacks by Sunni Arab insurgents intent on plunging Iraq into a sectarian strife.
In Mosul, a bomb blast in a restaurant killed five people, including a policeman. Also today (Monday), the American ambassador to Iraq warned that Washington will not accept sectarianism or militias in a new Iraqi government or in its security forces. Zalmay Khalilzad says top officials in the ministries of interior, defense and intelligence, as well as the national security adviser, must be non-sectarian and must work for all Iraqis.
The U.S. ambassador also accused Iran of training and arming militias in Iraq. Iraq's new parliament is to hold its first meeting Saturday, although major political factions remain deadlocked in efforts to form a unity government.
