Indian health officials in protective suits are slaughtering hundreds of thousands of chickens in a massive effort to control the country's first outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The health workers are taking control of the huge culling operation today (Monday) in a region of western India after health concerns were raised Sunday when farmers without protective gear were seen killing poultry.

Authorities confirmed the outbreak in birds Saturday after at least 30 thousand chickens were found dead in Nandurbar district in western Maharashtra state.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the situation in her country is "serious" after the deadly H5N1 virus was found Sunday for the first time in mainland Germany in two wild birds. Eighteen new cases were also discovered on the Baltic island of Ruegen.

No human bird flu cases have been reported outside of Asia and Turkey, where about 90 people have died since 2003.
