Government officials in India say several people are being tested for bird flu in the region where the country's first outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain in poultry has been discovered. Four of the people are being kept for observation in a hospital in the western state of Maharashtra.

The state's minister for animal husbandry (Anees Ahmed) says 50 thousand birds have died in the past few days at a poultry farm in Nandurbar, north of Bombay (which is also known as Mumbai). In Vienna, Austrian officials say the H5N1 virus is spreading in the country with the discovery of a dead swan in the city and other birds in the countryside.

Earlier today, Indonesia's Health Ministry said U.S. health officials (at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) confirmed the latest bird flu death in Indonesia. Health officials say (C.D.C.) test results verify that a 23-year-old man who died recently was a victim of the deadly strain, the latest victim of more than 90 deaths worldwide. Also today (Saturday), Hong Kong officials said a dead magpie was infected with the deadly strain.
