China is defending its Internet censorship policies, saying they are fully in line with international norms and practices.
Official state media in China report today (Wednesday) that the deputy chief of China's Internet watchdog, Liu Zhengrong, says recent U.S. criticism of China's policies is unfair and smacks of double standards.
His comments come as support grows in the U.S. for a government investigation into several Internet firms who allegedly helped China enforce censorship laws and track down government critics who communicate online.
Liu told the China Daily that no one in China has been detained simply for writing online. However, several dissidents have been imprisoned in China after making online comments critical of the government.
