이란이 민감한 핵 연료 활동을 재개하며 국제사회에 도전장을 내밀고 있다고 콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무 장관이 말했습니다. 라이스 장관은 15일 상원 외교 위원회에 출석해 부시 행정부는 이란 정부의 공격적인 정책에 대항할 것이라고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 국무부는 이란의 민주화 촉진을 위해 의회에 7천 5백만달러의 예산을 추가로 요청할 계획이라고 덧붙였습니다. 이 예산은 미국 정부의 대 이란 텔레비젼 위성 방송 확대와 미국내 민간 이란 단체 지원 자금 등으로 쓰여질 예정입니다.
라이스 장관은 이란 문제를 논의하기 위해 다음주 이집트와 사우디 아라비아를 방문할 예정입니다.
한편, 라이스 장관은 이날 청문회에서 하마스 주도의 새 팔레스타인 정부에 대한 미국의 입장을 밝혔습니다.
라이스 장관은 미국은 하마스 정부에 대해 원조를 지원하지 않을 것이라고 말하고 그러나 팔레스타인 국경 지역 어린이들에 대한 질병 면역 활동과 같은 인도주의 지원은 계속될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
라이스 장관은 하마스가 폭력을 중단하고 이스라엘의 존재 권리를 인정하라는 국제 사회의 요구를 수용해야만 한다며 미국의 입장을 거듭 강조했습니다.
팔레스타인 국회가 18일 첫 소집될 예정인 가운데 하마스는 15일 새 국회의장 후보와 당 의장을 지명하는 등 분주한 모습을 보이고 있습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Iran is in open defiance of the international community by resuming sensitive nuclear fuel work.
Rice told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today (Wednesday) that the Bush administration will confront what she said are the aggressive policies of the Iranian government.
She said the Bush administration plans to ask Congress for 75-million dollars in additional funding this year to promote democracy in Iran.
The money would go to efforts including increasing satellite television broadcasting to Iran from the U.S. government and private Iranian-American groups.
Rice travels to the Middle East next week for talks on Iran. She will stop in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says no U.S. aid will go to the Hamas-led Palestinian government, but the United States will still contribute to humanitarian programs like immunizing children in the Palestinian territories.
In testimony to a Senate committee today (Wednesday), Rice repeated the U.S. position that Hamas must meet international demands to renounce violence and recognize Israel's right to exist.
Hamas is preparing to take control of the Palestinian parliament when it convenes Saturday. On Wednesday the group nominated Abdel Aziz Duaik as parliament speaker and Mahmoud Zahar as faction leader.
