사담 후세인 전 이라크 대통령과 그의 측근 7명에 대한 재판이 14일 이들 8명이 모두 출석한 가운데 재개됐습니다. 이날 열린 재판도 이전과 마찬가지로 피고측과 라우프 압델 라만 재판장 간의 열띤 공방으로 시작됐습니다.
라만 재판장은 한때 후세인 전 대통령이 법정을 존중하지 않는다면서 재판봉을 내려쳤으며, 그러자 후세인은 재판봉으로 당신 머리를 내려치라고 쏘아붙였습니다.
후세인과 그의 측근들은 또 자신들에 대한 법원의 처우에 항의해 지난 사흘 간 단식투쟁을 벌였다고 말했습니다. 후세인 전 대통령과 나머지 피고들은 20여년 전 후세인에 대한 암살기도 이후 시아파 이슬람 교도들이 사는 마을 주민 140명을 학살한 혐의로 재판을 받고 있습니다.

The trouble-plagued trial of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and his seven co-defendants has resumed with all eight accused men present in the courtroom.
As on all previous occasions, today's (Tuesday's) session started with heated exchanges between the defendants and the chief judge (Raouf Abdel Rahman).
At one point the judge rebuked Saddam for not respecting the court and banged his gavel. Saddam retorted, "Hit your own head with the gavel."
Saddam also said he and his co-defendants have been on hunger strikes for the past three days to protest their treatment by the court. Two more former Saddam aides are testifying today.
Monday, two former aides appeared in court but refused to testify. They said they were forced to show up.
The former Iraqi leader and the other defendants are on trial for the massacre of 140 Shi'ite Muslim villagers after an assassination attempt against Saddam more than 20 years ago.
