French Prime Minister Dominque de Villepin begins a two-day visit to Russia today (Monday) for talks aimed at strengthening economic cooperation. In an interview in a Russian newspaper (Rossiiskaya Gazeta), Mr. de Villepin said special relations have developed between Russia and France. The two nations are expected to sign a number of agreements.
Human Rights Watch says Mr. de Villepin should use the visit to Moscow to voice concern over Russia's rollback of civil and political freedoms. The New York-based organization says the French leader should emphasize that the issue is of global concern.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday that some of Russia's efforts at democratic reform are, in her words, "going in the wrong direction." She cited cutting off natural gas to Ukraine over a price dispute, and a new law regulating non-governmental organizations.
