인체에 치명적인 H5N1 바이러스로 인한 조류 폐사사례가 이탈리아, 그리스, 불가리아 등 유럽에서도 처음으로 확인됐다고 관리들이 11일 밝혔습니다.
이탈리아의 프란체스코 스토라체 보건장관은 남부 푸글리아와 칼라브리아 및 시칠리아 등 3곳에서 발견된 폐사 백조에서 H5N1 바이러스가 검출된 것으로 확인됐다고 밝혔습니다.
그리스 관리들은 영국에서의 시험 결과 이번 주초에 북부의 살로니카 부근에서 죽은 채로 발견된 백조들의 사인이 영국 실험실 조사 결과 H5N1에 감염됐음이 확인됐다고 밝혔습니다.
유럽연합 관계자들은 또한 영국에서의 시험 결과 지난 주 불가리아 북부지역에서 죽은 채로 발견된 야생 백조들이 H5N1 바이러스에 감염된 것으로 확인됐다고 밝혔습니다. 루마니아 당국은 다뉴브강 삼각주지역에서 조류독감으로 의심되는 새로운 사례가 발생했다고 발표했습니다.
이밖에도 중국과 인도네시아는 10일 H5N1바이러스로 각각 1명이 사망했다고 발표했습니다. 지난 2003년 이후 세계에서 조류독감으로 인한 사망자수는 거의 90명에 이르고 있습니다.

Authorities have confirmed the presence of the deadly H5N1 bird flu in Italy, Greece and Bulgaria. Italy's Health Minister (Francesco Storace) says officials have found infected dead swans in Puglia and Calabria in southern Italy, and in Sicily.
Greek officials say tests at a British laboratory have confirmed that dead swans found near the northern city of Salonika were victims of the deadly strain. European Union officials say the British laboratory also confirmed the presence of the H5N1 strain in swans in northern Bulgaria.
Officials in neighboring Romania reported new cases of suspected bird flu in the Danube Delta Elsewhere, China and Indonesia each reported Friday one new human death from the H5N1 strain.
The illness has killed nearly 90 people worldwide since 2003. Experts say migratory birds are spreading the virus. World health officials are working to prevent a potential global pandemic.
