죠지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 미국에 대한 테러리스트들의 공격음모가 국제적인 노력에 의해 저지되지 않았더라면 파멸적인 참사가 벌어졌을 것이라고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 9일, 이곳 워싱턴의 내셔널 가드 메모리얼 빌딩에서 연설하는 가운데 2001년 10월에 알-카이다의 고위 단원인 칼리드 셰이크 모하메드가 미국 서부지역에서 가장 높은 로스앤젤레스의 라이브러리 타워 빌딩에 민간 여객기를 충돌시키는 계획을 세웠었다고 밝히면서 이같이 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 이 같은 음모에 동남아시아 테러단체인 제마아 이슬라미야의 고위 간부인 함발리 등 단원들도 관여했었다고 말했습니다.
이들 테러리스트들은 신발 폭탄을 신고 여객기에 탑승한뒤 조종실을 점거할 계획을 꾸몄던 것으로 알려졌습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 이 같은 음모가 국제적인 노력으로 분쇄될 수 있었으며 다른 나라들에서 실시된 심문에 따라 관련자들을 추적해 낼 수 있었다고 설명했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 현재 테러리즘에 관한 국제적 협력이 그 어느 때보다도 강화돼 있다면서 파키스탄, 사우디 아라비아 등 한때 자국에 대한 테러리스트 위협을 무시했던 나라들도 협력에 참여하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 나라 이름은 밝히지 않은채 동남아의한 나라가 테러리스트 조직, 알-카이다의 주요 간부 한 명을 검거함으로써 음모가 밝혀질 수 있었다고 말했습니다.

President Bush has given further details of an alleged terrorist plot in the United States, saying he believed the intended target was a high-rise building in Los Angeles.
Speaking at the National Guard Association in Washington today (Thursday), Mr. Bush said that in October 2001, al-Qaida had set in motion a plan to fly a civilian plane into a Los Angeles office building, the highest on the West Coast. He said the plot involved members of the Southeast Asian terror group, Jemaah Islamiyah, including one of its leaders, Hambali.
The president praised the international effort it took to break up the alleged plot, and the interrogations other nations conducted that he said helped track down those involved.
Mr. Bush used the example to counter critics who have said that his global war on terror has alienated other nations. He said global cooperation against terror has reached an all-time high, involving countries that once ignored the threat, including Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
