코피 아난 유엔 사무총장은 뉴욕에서 9일, 회교 창시자 모하메트를 풍자하는 만화를 게재한 신문들을 규탄했습니다. 아난 사무총장은 유럽 신문들의 모하메트 풍자만화 게재로 시작된 회교도들의 항의시위가 전세계로 확산되고 있는 가운데 문제의 만화는 무감각하고 공격적이며 도발적인 것이라고 지적하면서 이같이 규탄했습니다.
레바논의 시아파 회교도들은 수도, 베이루트에서 아슈라 축일 행사에 참가했다가 모하메드 풍자만화에 대한 항의시위를 벌였습니다. 남아공화국의 케이프 타운에서도 회교도 수 천 명이 항이시위를 벌였습니다.
모하메트 풍자만화에 대한 회교도들의 항의시위는 지난 며칠 사이에 전세계로 번지는 가운데 여러 나라들에서 풍자만화가 처음 신문에 게재된 덴마크의 외교공관들이 화염병 등으로 공격당하는 폭력사태로 확대되기도 했습니다.
한편, 미국의 콘돌리사 라이스 국무장관은 시리아와 이란이 회교도들의 항의시위를 부추기고 있다고 비난했습니다.
또한 미국은, 아프리카 케냐에서 10일로 예정된 모하메트 풍자만화에 대한 군중의 항의시위가 폭력사태로 번질 가능성이 있다고 경고하고 있습니다.
미국 관계관들은 나이로비에 있는 미국 시민들에게 시위현장에 접근하지 말도록 촉구하면서 이같이 경고했습니다. 케냐의 회교도들은 수도, 나이로비에서 항의시위를 벌이자고 촉구하고 있으며 케냐 주재 덴마크 대사관까지 군중의 행진이 벌어질 것으로 보입니다.
케냐 주재 덴마크 대사관에 이웃해 있는 미국 대사관은 이날 문을 닫는다고 말했습니다.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan criticized the media today (Thursday) for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, as protests against the cartoons continued in the Muslim world.
Speaking in New York, Annan called the cartoons insensitive, offensive and provocative.
Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese Shi'ite Muslims turned a religious commemoration in Beirut today into a largely peaceful protest against the cartoons. Thousands of Muslims also protested In Cape Town, South Africa.
In the past several days, some protests turned violent, and European diplomatic posts were attacked in several countries. A newspaper in Denmark was the first one to publish the cartoons.
On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused Syria and Iran of fueling the violence. Syria's ambassador to the U.S. (Imad Moustapha) denies the charges. He says "rogue elements" were responsible for demonstrations in Syria and that many protesters have been arrested.
The United States is warning of possible violence in Kenya during protests planned for Friday against cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
Kenyan Muslims have called for demonstrations in Nairobi, including a possible march on the Danish embassy.
The U.S. embassy in Nairobi said it will close offices of the U.S. Agency for International Development near the Danish embassy. U.S. officials also urged Americans to avoid the area, saying protests intended to be peaceful can turn violent.
