An apparent suicide bombing aimed at Shi'ite Muslims in Pakistan has killed at least 22 people in an area near the Afghan border and wounded at least 40 others. Police and Shi'ite leaders say the bomb went off today (Thursday) in or near a crowd of Muslims marking Ashura, the principal holy day in the Shi'ite calendar, in Hangu, a town in North West Frontier province.

Shots rang out during the chaotic aftermath of the bombing, and some witnesses say there were multiple explosions. Authorities say Shi'ites angered by the attack rampaged through the town, about 200 kilometers from Islamabad. Troops and paramilitary squads were sent in to try to control rioting, and Muslim clerics at both Shi'ite and Sunni mosques in the town appealed to their congregations to remain calm and avoid violence.

Ashura marks the death in the 7th Century of Imam Hussain, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, at the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq. Hussain's death sparked the permanent rivalry between Islam's Sunni and Shi'ite branches. Most of Pakistan's Muslims are Sunnis. There has been no indication that today's blast was related to Muslim protests in Pakistan and other countries against the publication of cartoons that insulted the Prophet Muhammad.
