세계보건기구, WHO는 4일, [세계 암의 날]을 맞아 암퇴치에 더욱 적극적으로 나설 것을 전 세계에 촉구했습니다.

WHO는 암의 40% 이상이 예방할 수 있으며, 또 암을 예방하기 위한 국제적인 노력이 앞으로 10년 동안에 800만명의 인명을 구할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다. 이안 심슨 WHO 대변인은 사람들이 암을 예방할 수 있는 가장 쉬운 방법은 금연하는 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

담배는 최대의 단일 암발생 원인으로 매년 150만명이 암으로 사망하고 있습니다. WHO는 또한 보다 좋은 규정식과 보다 많은 운동을 권장했습니다. WHO 관계관들은 도시 생활을 하는 사람들이 오래 앉아서 일하게 되면서 비만에 걸릴 확률이 높아지는 데 이것이 암 발생의 원인이 된다고 지적했습니다.

The World Health Organization is marking World Cancer Day today (Saturday) by calling for global action to reduce cancer levels. The U.N. health agency says more than 40 percent of cancer is avoidable, and that international efforts to prevent it could save eight million lives over the next decade. W.H.O.

Spokesman Ian Simpson says the easiest way for people to prevent cancer is to avoid smoking. Tobacco is the single largest cause of cancer, accounting for one-and-a-half million cancer deaths annually. The agency also advocates a better diet and more exercise.

W.H.O. officials say people living an urban lifestyle tend to become sedentary and obese, which can cause cancer. The World Health Organization says that seven-point-six million people died of cancer in 2005. It warns that 84-million people will die in the next decade unless action is taken.
