South Korea says it will scale back a quota system on its domestic film industry as part of efforts to facilitate talks with the United States on a free trade agreement.

South Korea's Finance Minister Han Duck-soo said today (Thursday) that beginning in July, the government will cut in half a quota requiring cinemas to show local films for 146 days of the year --- to 73 days.

The quota system was set up in 1966 to protect South Korea's film industry from foreign competition, and has been one of the main obstacles to starting free trade talks with the United States.

The United States demands that South Korea reduce or eliminate the quota before talks begin.
