An expert in the U.S. insurance industry says a pandemic of bird flu might kill millions of Americans and cost life insurance companies up to 133-billion dollars.

His data show that is more than double what the companies pay out in a typical year on individual and group policy claims.

Economist Steven Weisbart of the Insurance Information Institute says it is very difficult to estimate the human and financial cost of a potential bird flu pandemic. He says the "severe" case estimate is based on the deadly 1918 flu pandemic.

He estimates that a "moderate" pandemic -- like those experienced in 1957 and 1968 -- could kill hundreds of thousand of Americans and hit the industry with an extra 31 billion dollars in costs.
