North Korea has awarded a medal to an American aid worker who died last year. The medal was given to honor his relief work in the Stalinist nation.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported today (Sunday) that North Korea's friendship medal was bestowed Tuesday on Ellsworth Culver at a ceremony in Portland, Oregon in the U.S. Pacific northwest.
Culver headed the U.S.-based Mercy Corps, which helped deliver food and medical care in the impoverished nation. Yonhap says Culver is the first U.S. citizen to receive a medal from North Korea.
He died in August at the age of 78.
