President Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced differences about the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay Friday, but pledged to work together on Iran's nuclear program and other issues.
The two leaders described their 45-minute White House meeting as warm and friendly. The visit is Ms. Merkel's first to the United States since becoming chancellor last year.
Ms. Merkel told reporters that she spoke openly with Mr. Bush about Germany's opposition to the Guantanamo facility, saying the U.S. needs to come up with new ways to deal with suspected terrorists.
Mr. Bush said he rejected calls to close the prison, saying it is needed to protect the American people.
The two leaders pledged cooperation on a number of other issues, including possible U.N. intervention against Iran's nuclear program.
