동아프리카의 케냐 등 몇몇 가뭄이 심각한 나라들은 비상식량 지원이 곧 이뤄지지 않을 경우 인도적 재앙에 직면하게 될 것이라고 유엔 세계식량계획 관계자들이 말했습니다.
세계식량계획 (WFP)의 지역국장인 홀드부룩 아더씨는 13일 성명에서 얼마나 많은 사람들이 위험한 상태에 있는지는 정확히 알 수 없지만 최소한 5백만명이 현재 비상식량 지원을 필요로 하고 있다고 말했습니다.
아더씨는 많은 어린이들이 하루 한끼 밖에 먹을 수 없는 상황이어서 건강이 악화되고 있으며 가축들도 탈진과 식량 및 식수 부족으로 죽어가고 있다고 말했습니다.

Officials with the U.N. World Food Program are warning that Kenya and other drought-stricken nations in east Africa are facing a "humanitarian catastrophe" if emergency food aid is not received soon.
W.F.P. regional director Holdbrook Arthur said in a statement today (Friday) exact figures on how many people are in danger are still being established, but at least five million people are now in need of emergency food aid.
He says the health of children is deteriorating because many are only able to eat one meal a day. Arthur says livestock are dying in large numbers from exhaustion and lack of food and water.
He says Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti are facing a crisis, and donor nations need to respond immediately.
