브라질 론도니아주 외딴 지역에 위치한 초만원의 형무소를 장악한 수감자들에 의해 2백명 이상이 인질로 잡혀있다고 브라질 당국자들이 밝혔습니다.
이 같은 대치 사태는 지난 25일 론도니아 주도, 포르트 벨류에 있는 우르소 브란코 형무소에서 수감자들이 칼로 위협하며 인질들을 잡으면서 시작됐습니다.
수감자들은 지난 달 다른 형무소로 이전됐던 자신들의 영웅가운데 한 사람인 에디닐도 파울라 수자를 복귀시키도록 요구하고 있습니다. 수자는 지난 2004년 우르소 브란코 형무소에서 14명의 수감자가 사망하도록 만들었던 닷새 동안의 유혈 폭동을 이끌었습니다.

Authorities in Brazil say over 200 people are being held hostage by inmates who have taken over an overcrowded prison in the remote Amazonian state of Rondonia.The standoff began Sunday at the Urso Branco prison in the state capital of Porto Velho, when inmates seized hostages at knifepoint. Officials say all of those held captive are relatives of the inmates.
The prisoners are demanding the return of one of their heroes, Edinildo Paula de Souza, who was transferred to another prison last month. He led a bloody five-day uprising at Urso Branco in 2004 that left 14 inmates dead.
Authorities have cut off water and electricity supplies and are withholding food from the rioters at Urso Branco -- a facility that was built to house 350 inmates, but currently holds at least 12-hundred.
