미국 국가안보국은 부쉬 행정부가 시인한 것보다 광범위하게 법원의 영장 없이 전자메일과 전화 통화를 감시해 왔다고 뉴욕타임스 신문이 보도했습니다.
이 신문은 24일 국가안보국이 통신회사들의 도움 아래 국내와 국제 통신을 도청하고 있다고 전현직 정부 관리들이 말했다고 전했습니다.
신문은 통신회사들은 2001년 9/11 테러사태 이후 전화통화 행태에 대한 정보를 저장해 왔으며 국가안보국 관리들은 테러분자 수색을 위해 이 정보를 검토했다고 보도했습니다.
이에 대해 알베르토 곤잘레스 법무장관은 이같은 일은 테러 용의자 추적을 위한 개선된 방법이라고 주장했습니다.

A published report says the U.S. National Security Agency has conducted broader surveillance of e-mails and telephone conversations without court orders than the Bush administration has admitted.
The New York Times reports today (Saturday) that current and former government officials told the newspaper the NSA accessed domestic and international communications with help from telecommunication companies.
The newspaper says companies have been storing information on calling patterns since the September 11th, 2001 attacks, and that NSA officials have been studying the information in hope of finding terrorists.
The Bush administration has been under increased scrutiny for authorizing without court orders the surveillance of what the government says is only international calls and e-mails to and from the United States.
U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez has defended the practice, calling it an improved method of tracking suspected terrorists.
