Indonesian health officials say local medical tests show two more people have died of bird flu. The country's health ministry said today (Monday) the suspected cases include an eight-year-old boy in Jakarta, and a 39-year-old man, both of whom died last week.

It is not clear if contact with sick birds may be responsible for at least one of the deaths. A World Health Organization laboratory in Hong Kong is testing samples from the two victims to confirm whether they had the disease.

So far, avian flu is known to have killed nine people in Indonesia, and more than 70 in Asia since 2003.

The United Nations coordinator for bird flu says the world is losing the battle against the spread of the current avian influenza outbreak.

David Nabarro says culling of birds is necessary to limit the spread of the virus and reduce the chance of a mutation that could lead to its rapid spread between people.

Mr. Habarro spoke in Jakarta where Indonesian officials unveiled a bird flu management plan. He said Indonesia faces huge challenges in controlling the spread of the virus and everything will hinge on how completely the plan is implemented.

Indonesian officials are waiting for test results from a World Health Organization laboratory in Hong Kong to see if two human deaths in the Jakarta area last week are from the deadly H5N1 variant of bird flu.

If the cases are confirmed as bird flu, they will bring Indonesia's human toll from the disease to eleven.
