피터 맨델슨 유럽연합 무역위원장은 홍콩에서 열리고 있는 세계무역기구 (WTO) 회의에서 전세계 자유무역 협정 이행과 관련해 진전이 있을지 여부에 대해 의문을 제기했습니다.
맨델슨 위원장은 16일 홍콩에서 행한 연설에서 협상이 현재처럼 계속될 경우 진전은 어려울 것이라고 말했습니다. 맨델슨 위원장은 몇몇 핵심 쟁점을 둘러싼 협상이 합의에 이르지 못하고 있는 상황을 지적했습니다.
그러나 상당수 세계무역기구 회원국들은 유럽연합이 농업보조금 감축을 거부해 자유무역 협정에 대한 합의를 막고 있다고 비난했습니다.

European Union Trade Chief Peter Mandelson is questioning whether progress toward implementing a global trade agreement can be achieved during the World Trade Organization conference.
Speaking today (Friday) in Hong Kong, Mr. Mandelson said success will be difficult if the talks -- in his words -- "continue in this direction." He was apparently referring to the lack of agreement in negotiations over several key issues. Many WTO members accuse the EU of blocking an international trade deal by refusing to cut its farm subsidies.
Meanwhile, some larger, developed nations (including the United States and European Union) are examining a proposal to give the world's least developed countries unrestricted access to their markets. Thursday, the United States said it will allow duty-free imports of cotton from West Africa. (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Senegal).
